Livelihoods Research in the Niger Delta. A Multi-State Research on Livelihoods in Bayelsa & Rivers States, Nigeria. (2019-2020)

This multi-state mixed methods research initiative embarks on a comprehensive exploration of livelihoods in two vital regions within the Niger Delta: Bayelsa and Rivers States, Nigeria. The research seeks to dissect and understand the intricate interplay between the livelihoods of the local population and two crucial focal points.

  1. Artisanal Refining in the Niger Delta: In collaboration with the FACE Initiative, a Bayelsa State-based NGO, this research delves into the world of artisanal refining, a significant driver of conflicts in the Niger Delta. This oil-rich yet oil-polluted region of Nigeria is marred by a complex tapestry of socio-economic and environmental challenges. The study shed light on the nexus between artisanal refining and the livelihoods of the local population. By doing so, it highlighted the multifaceted implications of this practice on the people and their communities, ultimately contributing to conflict resolution, sustainable development, and environmental conservation.
  1. Women’s Livelihoods in Ogoniland: In collaboration with the Kebetkache Women Development Centre, a Rivers State-based NGO, this research focused its lens on the livelihoods of women in Ogoniland. Ogoniland, a region renowned for its rich cultural heritage, faces unique challenges and opportunities, particularly for its female population. This study offered an assessment of the challenges and prospects that shape the livelihoods of Ogoni women. By doing so, it sought to empower and uplift women in the region, fostering gender equality, economic resilience, and community development.
